What Is Gum Therapy?

Dentist Hummelstown

Gum therapy focuses on preventing, diagnosing, and treating gum disease, a common condition that can quietly damage the tissues and bone that support your teeth. Early stages of gum disease may cause symptoms like bleeding, tenderness, or bad breath, while more advanced stages can lead to gum recession, bone loss, and even tooth loss. At Hershey Dental Associates, gum therapy is designed to stop the progression of disease, restore gum health, and protect the long-term stability of your smile. As a practice centered on Biological Dentistry in Hummelstown, we take a thoughtful, conservative approach that considers both oral health and overall wellness.

Treatment may include deep cleanings such as scaling and root planing, targeted home care recommendations, and ongoing maintenance to keep bacteria under control. The goal is not only to treat existing infection, but also to create a healthier environment in the mouth so the gums can heal and stay healthy over time. Gum therapy plays an important role in overall health because healthy gums are the foundation for strong teeth, comfortable chewing, and long-lasting dental restorations.

Benefits of Gum Therapy

Dentist Hummelstown

Gum therapy helps remove harmful bacteria and buildup that cause inflammation and infection. This allows the gums to heal and better support the teeth, reducing the risk of future damage or tooth loss.

Treating gum disease early can help prevent bone loss, gum recession, and the need for more complex procedures later. Early intervention supports more comfortable, predictable, and conservative care.

Healthier gums often mean less bleeding, less sensitivity, and fresher breath. Many patients notice improved comfort and confidence once gum infection and inflammation are brought under control.

I cannot say enough good things about this practice. All of the staff I've dealt with (hygienist, billing, reception, check out) have been very nice and extremely helpful. The hygienists I've spoken to about the problems I'm having (caused by my previous dentist) have been so empathetic, supportive, encouraging and helpful. The dentist I had a consult with was also very understanding, sympathetic and informative. And finally their specialist (extractions, root canals) set my mind at ease as well. I like having alternative options (such as no fluoride, ozone, homeopathic remedies, etc.). I cannot believe the level of excellence & support I've experienced so far. Wish I had come here sooner. Thank you so much, Hershey Dental!

I don’t ever review, ever… until now. I chipped a front tooth and called to see if I could get an appointment before Christmas. They got me in right away. Emily was incredible! She said “ I’m just doing my job,” But it was much more. With the waiting room full, she took her time like I was a family member. She apologized for being a perfectionist, but that is what I appreciated most. she loves her job, and that shows!Thank you for fixing my smile, Merry Christmas!

We have always found the receptionist & staff to be very welcoming working in a clean, tastefully decorated office. We are blessed to be under the care of Dr. Fortna & dental hygienists who are professional, skilled & have very warm personalities.
